Licensed interior designers to require degree, a test and two years experience

KALAMAZOO - A bill that would license interior designers in Michigan would bring more jobs to the state and ensure competent work, supporters say.

If passed by the Legislature, the three-part bill would require interior designers to receive a degree and pass a test to become a licensed professional.

Interior designers currently are not registered or licensed, so there is no way to tell if an interior designer is qualified, said Linda Thomas, president of the Coalition for Interior Design.

Opponents say consumers can examine portfolios and Web sites and interview interior designers to safeguard against quality-of-work issues.
